TIME Magazine Bashes Teachers
Randi Weingarten and Michael Mulgrew delivered 100,000+ petitions and letters to Time Magazine
“A cover that suggests that teachers need to be smashed is dead wrong,” says AFT President Randi Weingarten. If you missed the coverage of the delivery of our 102,000 petition signatures to Time Magazine on Thursday afternoon, watch the video.
The UFT and AFT are using a #TIMEfail hashtag on twitter, and call on schools to boycott the magazine.
Teacher Laurie Troiano says, “We didn’t become teachers to make a profit. We became teachers because we believe in the american dream… How about we come into the classroom and see our success stories every day?”
Natasha Capers, from the NYC Coalition for Educational Justice, says, “It does nothing but try to put a wedge in between parents and teachers”
TIME’s managing editor, Nancy Gibbs, commented in a letter on the magazine’s website:
“Union leaders … are charging that by writing about legal efforts to remove bad teachers from classrooms, with the cover line ‘Rotten Apples,’ TIME has insulted all teachers; some of them have launched protests and petition drives,” says the letter. “In fact, TIME has nothing but admiration for America’s dedicated teachers and their commitment to excellence.”
