8 Things Teachers Should do Before the End of Summer
August?? It’s August?? Oh, man. Where does the time go! Before you hit Staples for the back-to-School sale, please do yourself a favor. Check out our new list:
Listen to this post!
8 things teachers should do before the end of the summer.
1. Read something the kids are reading (but NOT that you’re teaching)
What’s the new series? Check out a book! Whether it’s the new Pete the Cat, or a Rick Riordan tome, at the very least you’ll be current (for the start of the year anyway). Keep this in your back pocket for some quick cache with your new students!
2. Take a day trip
From NYC and the surrounding areas, you can head out to Long Island’s Jones Beach, ride the new roller coaster at Coney Island, catch a Cyclones Game (or Staten Island Yankees), head upstate
3. Sleep
Oh, boy. Enjoy it now 🙂 You’re about to put in a ton of work.
4. Set goals for yourself!

Need your 30 and above? (click here)
Need a Masters? (click here)
Want your PhD? (click here)
Want to move into Pre-K or Early Childhood? (click here)
Want to get your Administration license? (click here)
Want to be a school counselor? (click here)
Need courses like DASA? (click here)
Where do you want to go, and what one step can you take to get there? Write it down. Hold yourself accountable.
5. Learn from last year!
Glance through your lesson plan book from last year. Leaf through your student notes. Browse your completed homework and test grades. Any common threads? Something not land? This is the time to head off problems that you encountered last year! A little planning now, when you’re fresh, means you won’t hit a road block when you’re in the thick of it.
6. Find your support group!
The Teacher’s Lounge (lunchroom?) is nice, but tends to get sucked into a tone of what’s-wrong-with-kids or what’s-wrong-with-this-place — Touch base with the positive people in your teaching circle now! Maybe make a standing dinner date for Thursdays, have some laughs, some wine, and some good Italian food. This will help you take a step back! Find them now, before everyone’s busy.
7. Like Movies? Books? Theater?
Check out what’s coming in the fall season. Plan a few can’t-miss events now. Keep them in your calendar. Make it happen.
8. Smile!
A colleague once told me don’t smile until Thanksgiving. She was a veteran. She knew a lot. On this point, she was wrong. You have good classroom management. Smile. Smile now, smile later.
Have a great year!
