We have several positions open and are seeking qualified candidates.
The New LIFE School offers an intensive educational and therapeutic environment to foster the development of the academic, social, and emotional life of each student that walks through our doors. The New LIFE Schools is a New York State Approved Non-Public Day School serving students ages 8-21 (grades 3-12) whose educational and emotional needs cannot be met in a mainstream classroom setting.
Students are provided with a supportive, structured, and caring environment with small classroom sizes and individual academic and behavioral planning. Students are able to graduate with a Regents diploma, learn vocational skills, and work to their fullest potential at our school. OPEN POSITIONS:
POSITION: Occupational Therapist
REPORTS TO: Director of Clinical Services
CLASSIFICATION: Full Time
EXEMPT/NONEXEMPT: Exempt
GENERAL DESCRIPTION:
The Occupational Therapist will fulfill the occupational therapy mandates for any student needing such services, as identified on the child’s Individual Education Plan, and will provide any necessary Occupational Therapy evaluations or updates. Occupational Therapy services may be provided on an individual or group basis and may be provided in a separate location or in the classroom, at the teacher’s discretion.
MAJOR DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES:
Provide individual and/or group Occupational Therapy sessions according to the schedule developed with the Clinical Director, in consultation with the Principal of The New LIFE School and the Executive Director.
Provide Occupational services to each identified student, as mandated.
Provide attendance card and log note documentation in support of Occupational services provided.
Formulate annual goals and short term objectives for our students that can be presented at annual review time to the Committee on Special Education.
Assess and screen possible candidates for Occupational Therapy as directed by the school administration.
Attend and participate in ongoing staff in-service trainings and quarterly meetings.
Reduce disruption to the regular class and school routine.
Provide an annual report of each student’s progress, with recommendations at annual review time as to continuance or termination of Occupational Therapy as a related service.
Assist classroom staff with adaptations needed for any student requiring Occupational Therapy services.
Perform a thorough Occupational Therapy evaluation for each student in need of services, as directed by school administration.
Assist parents / guardians in understanding the occupational needs of their special needs children.
Assist in the intake screening process as determined by potential student occupational needs.
Perform all other job-related duties as necessary.

QUALIFICATIONS
EDUCATION:
Bachelor’s Degree or Master’s Degree in Occupational Therapy from an accredited occupational therapy professional program recognized by NBCOT; must have completed all field requirements.
NYS Certification as an Occupational Therapist.
EXPERIENCE:
+Minimum of 2 years’ experience as an occupational therapist, preferably in a school system or other pediatric practice setting, or equivalent job experience with occupationally impaired children / adolescents
SKILLS & ABILITIES:
Demonstrated ability to provide the level of occupational therapy services needed by a special needs adolescent population
Demonstrated ability to work cooperatively with classroom teaching staff
Demonstrated ability to effectively write occupational therapy reports
Demonstrated ability to effectively write occupational therapy evaluations
Demonstrated ability to communicate and represent our students at annual review meetings conducted by the Committee on Special Education
Demonstrated ability to provide the level of written data required to support occupational therapy services provided to each student at our school

5. Consult with classroom teachers on language techniques appropriate for classroom use
6. Assess and screen possible candidates for speech and language therapy as directed by the school administration
7. Collaborate on curriculum with regard as to language activities used in speech therapy
8. Avoid disruption to the regular class and school routine
9. Provide an annual report of student progress with recommendations at annual review time as to continuance or termination of speech as a related service
10. Assist classroom staff with adaptations for any student receiving English as a Second Language services
11. Perform thorough speech and language evaluations, as directed by school administration
12. Assist parents / guardians in understanding the speech and language needs of their children
13. Assist in the intake screening process with determining potential student speech needs

GENERAL DESCRIPTON:
The Special Education Teacher is responsible for the academic, instructional, remedial, behavioral and adaptive needs of all our special needs students. The Special Education Teacher must have strong behavioral management skills and techniques that foster the classroom instructional process. The Special Education Teacher must have a functional understanding and ability to meet all reporting mandates as determined by various governmental agencies. The Special Education Teacher must work cooperatively with fellow staff, parents, guardians, outside agencies and the Committee on Special Education to better serve our students.
MAJOR DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES:
1. Plan and implement appropriate and adapted classroom instruction for assigned students in accordance with mandates as found in each student’s Individualized Education Plan
2. Prepare and implement short term objectives to meet the annual goals of each student as found on the IEP
3. Follow school procedures for clerical tasks related to the IEP
4. Prepare daily lesson plans for all instructional periods in a format developed in collaboration with the school administration
5. Keep accurate records of individual student progress throughout the school year
6. Provide students and parents with evaluative feedback on student progress on at least a quarterly basis
7. Communicate on a regular basis with Related Services staff regarding each student’s overall social-emotional development in school and in the community
8. Maintain an appropriate physical environment in the classroom and work areas
9. Plan for the effective integration of the Teacher Assistant for all classroom activities
10. Develop curricula throughout the school year consistent with the class profile developed with school administrative staff
11. Actively participate in regular student progress conference sessions
12. Assist and supervise students as required throughout the school day, including arrival and dismissal processes
13. Participate in the intake screening process as requested for potential new enrollees
14. Become familiar with each student’s initial case record review
15. Communicate on a regular basis with the parents and guardians of each student
16. Attend staff meetings before and after regular school hours and at other required meeting times and places

+ NYS Permanent / Professional Certification in Special Education, Elementary or High School level and or content specialty certification as needed

+ Bachelor and/or Master’s Degree in Education or a related field
EXPERIENCE:
+ Minimum of 2 years’ classroom experience teaching special needs students or other related experiences dealing with children and adolescents
SKILLS & ABILITIES:
+ Demonstrated ability to understand and implement NYS Learning Standards through the instructional classroom process
+ Demonstrated ability to provide effective classroom management skills and techniques for a school-age level special needs student population
