Here is an excerpt from a Professional Development workshop, aptly named: “Exc-ELL-ent” Practices for the ELL Classroom at I.S. 259K.
It’s clear that having a specific approach to teaching English Language Learners is paramount to their development. We had informative presentations surrounding the challenges of ELLs in both Social Studies, as well as in Sciences.
We also reviewed ‘The SIOP Model‘ as a helpful tool in crafting a successful lesson plan for ELLs and asked teachers to select a lesson plan they would have taught and redeveloped it with the SIOP model in mind.
The video demonstrations at the end help pull all the techniques together.
The event was a success and one attendee remarked: “I look forward to implementing the strategies with my children…please come back for more!”
