Hi, my name is Hussain “Mr. H” Abdullah. I am a third year Mathematics Specialist at P.S.971, an elementary school in Brooklyn, NY. Before officially having the opportunity to lead a classroom, my journey began as a Paraprofessional and acting Parent Coordinator at P.S.38 also in Brooklyn, NY. The hiring freeze led to an opportunity at P.S.971 as a Community Coordinator. My teaching experience includes facilitating Mathematics, Physical Education and Art grades prekindergarten through sixth grade.
The CITE program has provided an opportunity to grow as a leader and possibly become an administrator one day. Currently, a member of Cohort 40 the pursuit of an SBL (School Building Leadership) certification will make that a reality. Following the SBL is the Doctoral program, for now it is one step at a time. Cohort 40 has become a family filled with a network of future change makers. The cohort is made up of college professors, educators from all grades and even a charter school principal. We have had access to people who are in the know and in the mix. Some programs have professors who talk about how things were, not CITE. The program has also allowed us to meet great professors and enjoy time at St. Rose’s beautiful Albany campus. During our summer classes our cohort was able to meet and talk with John King, NYS Commissioner of Education and President of the University of the state of New York.
My philosophy on building leadership (rather Professional Learning Communities) and education has shifted. Before CITE there was a belief that “I” had to be the difference maker. Today, that is no longer the case. The keys to success lie in collaboration and engaging all stakeholders in the community. Without buy-in from everyone who is involved in children’s education we cannot totally benefit the students we serve. As educational leaders we must ensure our staff is well trained in the tools and programs that will empower our students.

The mission is to create a space where families and educators can find resources and converse in an effort to help children. I feel confident that the time spent in the CITE program will prepare me for the certification examinations and administration. I truly appreciate the opportunity to be a member of the CITE program. Lastly, a huge shout out to Professor Marilyn Johnson there is none better.
