Doctoral Program Hailed as ‘Historic’ “Groundbreaking”

Fifteen CSA members broke notable ground for their union recently, becoming the first to earn Doctorates through a new, collaborative degree program.

The fifteen, each a Principal, Assistant Principal or administrative staffer, spent 27 months – classes started in 2012 – working on their doctoral theses with Sage College professors under the Sage Colleges Educational Leadership NYC Doctoral Program, which was created by the Albany, NY, college, CSA and the Center for Integrated Training and Education (CITE.)
CSA President Ernest Logan called the program’s Nov. 19th graduation “a historic moment for CSA. A lot of people worked hard to get this program off the ground. It’s something we have wanted to do for our members for a long time.”
“This is very exciting,” Marlene Zakierski, director of the NYC doctoral program at Sage, said before the program’s Nov. 19th graduation ceremonies. “These are our pioneers.”

First cohort graduates were Alexis Marrero, Principal at IS 254 in the Belmont section of the Bronx, Inna Nurik, an Advanced Specialist at the Queens South Borough Field Support Center, Michelle Bodden-White, retired Principal at the United Federation of Teachers Charter School in Brooklyn, MS 289 Assistant Principal Andolyn Brown, Cynthia Carmona-Davis, an Assistant Principal at Thurgood Marshall Academy in Manhattan, Michael Collins, Principal at MS 125 in the Bronx, Cynthia Harris-Frederick, Principal at Brooklyn’s PS 289, Kateri Kennedy, the DOE’s Director of Secondary Literacy, Margaret Lacey-Berman, Principal, Brooklyn High School of the Arts, District 2 Teacher Development and Evaluation Coach Carla Ling, Subhas Mohan, Assistant Principal at HS 141 in the Bronx, sisters Mia Theresa Pate, Deputy Superintendent in Brooklyn’s District 23, and Tammy Pate, a teacher in the DOE’s Leaders in Education Apprenticeship Program, Brooklyn District 15 Assistant Principal Robert Quinlan, and Erika Tobias, Principal at PS 41 in the Bronx.
