Innovative PROSE Schools Announced
Chancellor Farina and UFT President Michael Mulgrew announced this list yesterday – the 62 schools selected to the city’s new innovative schools program, PROSE (Progressive Redesign Opportunity Schools for Excellence). (click here)
As part of the new UFT contract (more info here) the city decided that a number of schools could apply for exemption from contract stipulations and chancellor’s regulations in order to pursue innovative learning agendas.
Under PROSE program, teachers and school leaders will collaborate to implement innovative plans and practices this upcoming school year to meet student and staff needs.
PROSE SCHOOLS: THE PLANS
The plans range in scope and method. Here are some ideas:
- Engaging community health by providing a wide range of social services
- Staggering the school day
- Purchasing school food from local and sustainable producers
- Changing student-to-teacher ratios to allow for small classes and large lectures
- Using teacher-portfolios (including peer visits, PD experiences, and formal observations) to rate teachers
The Chancellor made this statement: “Real change happens when educators are empowered to develop the best, tailored strategies to help their students succeed,” said Schools Chancellor Carmen Farina.
INNOVATIVE PROSE SCHOOLS ANNOUNCED
United Federation of Teachers President Michael Mulgrew said, “Innovations like this will move education forward not just in New York, but around the country. Teachers, principals, parents, and the entire school community working together will truly advance education.”

107 schools applied for the innovative schools program (PROSE). The DOE approved plans that the UFT members in those schools voted on. 62 are going forward.
