Pride Month Resources for Educators
by Andrew Henry
June is LGBTQ+ Pride Month, during which we commemorate the 1969 Stonewall riot in New York City. This riot sprang up in response to the police brutality towards and harassment of the LGBTQ+ community in America. The Stonewall riot was the spark for a movement against injustice for the LGBTQ+ community. This week, we also celebrated the five-year anniversary of Obergefell v. Hodges, the landmark Supreme Court case that ruled that the fundamental right for same-sex couples to marry is guaranteed by the Fourteenth Amendment to the US Constitution, effectively legalizing Marriage Equality in the United States.
ADL has great resources and lesson plans for grades K – 12 on educating students on Pride Month. There are lesson plans on:
- What is Marriage Equality
- Boy Scouts of America Lifts Ban on Gay Leaders
- The Hate Crimes Prevention Act
- Understanding Heterosexism and How to Be an Ally
- The Stonewall Uprising
- Unheard Voices: Stories of LGBT History
You can find more LGBTQ+ Pride Month resources on their site here.
Share My Lesson also has free activities and more lesson plans on Celebrating Pride Month which you can find here. They have resources on:
- Using Children’s Literature to Open Doors on Historical and Current Events
