School Counseling Alumnus – Rick Matera
My name is Rick Matera and I am currently a Program Coordinator and School Counselor at Rutgers University T.E.E.M. Gateway – Project Rise.
I started the Alfred University / CITE School Counseling program in August of 2009 and completed in May of 2011. I was working while I attended classes as a freelance production designer for Viacom – MTV Networks.
Why CITE/ Alfred?
I chose the CITE/Alfred University program mainly because they offered classes in Brooklyn, fairly close to where I was living at the time. Even more importantly, they offered classes on the weekends, allowing me to continue to working during the week.
Staff
I thought the entire staff, including all instructors and directors, was amazing and always were extremely helpful. The one that stood out the most for me was Professor Walia because he was so personable and funny.
Challenges
The most challenging part of the program was balancing school work with a full time work schedule. I believe the practicum was extremely important for preparing me for my current job because it allowed me to experience the realistic day-to-day activities that a counselor faces head on. It was also a great tool for me to measure how effective I could be as a counselor.
Advice
The advice I would give someone else starting out would be to take a deep breath and to expect the unexpected because this profession will consistently test your will and provide you with many curve balls on a daily basis.
Would you recommend CITE/ Alfred?
I have recommended the CITE program to other people because of the wonderful staff and great opportunity that this program provided for its students. I think the most memorable advice that has remained with me was simply stated by both Dr. Bitting and Dr. Cerio on the very first day during our Orientation….”It’s gonna be ok.” The words were as simple as they were calming for a group of future school counselors who were uncertain and nervous for what was in store for them in the future.
The last thing that I would like to add is that I will always be grateful for the CITE program and I will cherish my experiences with my fellow classmates and CITE staff.
