DeBlasio backs off? The Mayor has said all along that once a plan is in place, he and the Chancellor will look at colocations on a case by case basis, so this should come as no surprise that he’s open to colocations. He’s basically said this all along: “There will be a moratorium until we can come up with a fair system that really values the voices of parents and values the needs of the receiving school. But then we will be able to do co-locations in an appropriate manner,” he said on the Brian Lehrer show. Here is the interview:

In light of the ongoing contract negotiations, the Washington Post has a story on why teacher’s salaries should be DOUBLE.
NYS COMMON CORE TESTS
State Ed Commissioner John King writes this letter to Superintendents about the upcoming State Tests. He urges districts to pull back on local testing. He stresses the fact that NY Common Core assessments have been written and reviewed by NY educators.

He says: “I cannot overemphasize the importance of communicating clearly and consistently to your students, parents and teachers that assessments are simply a tool to tell us where we are and help us get better,” and included a letter sample that superintendents can send to parents.
After the debacle of last year’s tests, more modest hopes are in place for gains.

Common Core out: Indiana has cut the Common Core off, without telling teachers what will come next.
More on the Indiana story here, including how the new standards that the state will put into place actually use the common core as their basis. Is this just a name-switch? A purely political move? We’ll see.
