Special Ed Teaching Positions

HeartShare Human Services seeks teachers and teaching assistants for special ed teaching positions.

HeartShare is a nonprofit organization dedicated to serving the needs of individuals with developmental disabilities. One of the services we offer is education programs. We currently have quite a few special ed teaching positions open, as well as teaching assistants:

  • Early Childhood Special Education Teachers (Birth-2)
  • Special Education Teachers (K-12)
  • Teachers’ Assistants.

Special Education Teacher — Howard Beach, Richmond Hill, Brooklyn

Requirements

  • MS.Ed in Early Childhood Education/Special Education
  • N.Y.S Certification: B – Gr. 2 Special Education / Early Childhood Education/ K-12 Special Education

Responsibilities

  • Maintain a high level of professionalism as a role model for all team members
  • Maintain standards of children according to the NAEYC Code of Ethical Conduct
  • Assess developmental functioning and learning skills of students in all areas utilizing appropriate assessment too
  • Write annual goals, behavioral objectives and intervention strategies corresponding with assessment in consultation with other disciplines 
  • Conduct CPSE annual review an requested review meetings and conduct CSE meetings as needed
  • Evaluate student progress on an on-going basis
  • Prepare developmentally appropriate daily activity schedules in coordination with other disciplines 
  • Design and manage an appropriate learning environment
  • Prepare weekly lesson plans according to a planned sequence with IEP goals and plan/share with teacher assistants. Hand into Supervisor weekly 
  • Provide daily for group and individual instruction within classroom with appropriate early childhood curriculum
  • Conduct trans-disciplinary team meetings on a bi-weekly basis, ensure minutes are written and distributed to all team members and maintain in a file.
  • Instruct an supervise teacher assistants and substitute teacher assistants in appropriate techniques to work effectively with children 
  • Communicate with parents on an on-going and as-needed basis to insure transition of instruction to the home in coordination with other discipline
  • Participate in staff development activities 
  • Consult and interface with colleagues as members of a team
  • Encourage on-going parent involvement at all times adhering to the Open Door Policy and invite parents to attend team meetings
  • Write notes to all parents at least once a week
  • Keep accurate attendance cards, as well as following up on absent notes
  • Write monthly notes related to IEP goals for the file
  • Update IEP’s quarterly 
  • Conduct initial behavioral observation when assigned

Special Education Teacher Assistant — Howard Beach, Richmond HiIl, Brooklyn

Requirements

  • High School Diploma/GED
  • NYS Teacher’s Aid (TA) Certification REQUIRED

TEAM FUNCTIONING:

  • Assist the classroom teacher with all aspects of classroom functioning, including instruction and care of the children, under the general supervision of the Classroom Teacher
  • Participate in Team Meetings & Staff Development
  • Work cooperatively as a member of the HeartShare Team
  • Be mindful of and respectful of the multicultural population served by HeartShare

EDUCATIONAL OBJECTIVES

  • Be aware of educational goals for children
  • Meet with teacher to discuss student progress
  • Actively engage children in the learning process
  • Verbally interact with children, giving ongoing direction as needed, ask questions, simulate topic conversation
  • Model language & behavior
  • Actively participate throughout the day, including during Circle time, Learning Centers, and Structured Gym
  • Work with students individually, as well as in small and large groups, on instructional activities

INTERACTION WITH STUDENTS

  • Set a positive role model for the children
  • Set a positive tone: use Positive Reinforcement; positive language; positive praise
  • Intervene Early! Do not let negative behaviors escalate
  • Be Fair: treat children equally
  • Reinforce classroom rules
  • Follow behavior treatment plans as outlined during Team Meetings
  • Never, EVER use physical punishment

CLASSROOM PREPARATION

  • Review lesson plans daily
  • Set up learning centers at the end of the day for the next day, or before the children arrive. Classroom preparation is not to be done while the children are present.

CLASSROOM CLEANLINESS

  • Vacuum floors
  • Mop up spills
  • Wash tables with bleach & water solutionSAFETY
  • Maintain the safety & well-being of the children at all times
  • Escort children to & from the bus
  • Count the number of children throughout the day
  • Be aware of when children are out of the classroom and in therapy
  • Do not dismiss the children to anyone who is not on the Emergency contact list or who does not have proper identification
  • Should an accident occur, an Incident Report must be completed and given to Administration

ACTIVITIES OF DAILY LIVING (ADL)

  • Toileting of children
  • Change diapers & clothing as needed
  • Monitor toilet trained children
  • Remind children to wash hands after toileting
